Summary: The Main Platforms For Business Blogging
If you’re looking to get a business blog up and running, you’re faced with a myriad of choices. Blogger vs Typepad vs Wordpress.com vs Wordpress.org vs Movable Type vs Expression Engine and even more.
How do you know which one is for you and which one to choose? Here’s a brief summary of a few of the main ones and a resource to help you choose…
Blogger
Link: Blogger
Cost: Free
Best for: Hobby blogs and personal blogs
Google-owned blogging platform that’s hosted (they host the blog for you) which means you don’t get to use your own domain name so your blog address will be something like yourname.blogspot.com.
Whilst blogger is great for hobby blogs and personal blogs, it’s less ideal as a professional business blog platform because you hae far less control over it and what you can do with it.
The best use for a Blogger blog for business, is to use it to practice on and hone your writing skills if you’d rather do this before launching your non-blogger business blog to the world.
Wordpress.com
Link: Wordpress
Cost: Free
Best for: Hobby blogs, personal blogs and semi-professional blogs
This is similar to Blogger in that it’s also hosted on Wordpress servers; it is however, much more customisable and flexible and could conceivably be used as a business blog if you’re looking for a low cost (free) solution. It is slightly simpler to get a more professional-looking blog on this platform than it is on Blogger, thanks to dozens of free templates available.
Typepad
Link: Typepad
Cost: From $4.95 per month
Best for: New professional/business bloggers and non-technical bloggers
Typepad is also a hosted solution but is a very user-friendly platform and makes it super easy to customise the layout, design, look and feel of your blog. If you go for the Plus account ($8.95 per month), you can also map your own domain name to your blog which allows you to have a more professional-looking url to direct people to (e.g. www.YourBusiness.com rather than YourBusiness.typepad.com).
Wordpress.org
Link: Wordpress
Cost: Free
Best for: Professional/business blogs and those who want full control & flexibility
This is possibly the most popular blogging platform out there and is used by many of the best-known bloggers around. The reason? It’s self-hosted (you have to install the Wordpress application on your own hosting service/servers - but this can be as simple as a 1-click action if you choose the right hosting service) which means you host it on whichever domain you want and it’s completely customisable, adaptable, extend-able and flexible.
